Leaving for the season
Frozen pipes in empty houses are the valley’s plumbing problem. If you’re closing up a house for the shoulder season or the winter, this is the short list.
What should I shut off?
Close the main water valve where the line comes into the house, then open a faucet on the lowest floor to let the pressure off. If the house has a fire sprinkler system, don’t close the valve that feeds it. If you’re not sure which valve is which, call the shop before you leave. If the house will sit empty for months, have the lines drained and blown out.
What should I set the thermostat to?
Leave the heat on and turned down, never off. A house with the heat off can freeze its pipes in one cold night.
What about the boiler and water heater?
Leave the boiler running so the heat stays on. If your water heater has a vacation setting, use it.
Who should check on the house?
Someone should walk through regularly, look under the sinks and make sure the heat is running.
Who do I call if something goes wrong?
Call the shop at (208) 726-8280, Monday to Friday, 8:00 to 4:30. Emergencies after hours: call (208) 726-8280 and leave a message. Anything that can wait, send as a service request and the office calls you back when it opens.
We work across the Wood River Valley: Ketchum, Sun Valley and Elkhorn, Hailey and Bellevue, and up to Stanley.
